Introduction To Molds

Molds produce tiny spores to reproduce. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp surface indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.  When excessive moisture or water accumulates indoors, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or un-addressed. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold(s) and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.

How can you be exposed to mold?

* Handling an object that has mold on it
* Breathing in the spores

Some things you should know about mold:

* Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include; allergic reactions, aggravation of asthma problems and other respiratory complaints, fatigue, headaches, mood swings and rashes, to name a few.
* There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
* Controlling Indoor Humidity levels is very important to discourage potential mold growth within the building.
* If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
* Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, walls, food and even on clothes. Please see the pictures below of some of the common places mold is found.

Visual Inspection

A visual inspection will identify leaks or moisture stains on walls, floors, under counters or on the ceilings. The attic and crawl spaces, as well as the HVAC unit will also be inspected. If there is any suspected growth, visible water damage or moisture stains, or musty odors a mold sampling will be recommended. If you are experiencing Allergenic issues in your home you should tell the inspector about when and where the symptoms occur.

Air Quality Sampling

Air sampling is done to determine the type and amount of airborne mold in a structure. Air sampling is necessary if the presence of mold or allergens is suspected, but cannot be identified by a visual inspection. Air quality test are performed on indoor and outdoor air samples, so the results can be compared to see if a problem exist.

Tape / Swap Sampling

These samples are collected by wiping the moldy area with a sterile swab; this is done to identify specific mold types.
